In this page we will explore how to express numbers in scientific notation and scientific notation values in decimal form, and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in scientific notation without losing precision.
Operations with Scientific Notation
Click on the picture to the left go to a playlist from Khan Academy that will walk you through how to multiply and divide, and add and subtract with numbers in scientific notation.
Scientific Notation on your Calculator
Below you will find some information on how to enter scientific numbers into the calculator
The video above describes scientific notation and why it's important with some example. Unfortunately our friend Tyler uses the "left-right" rule about how to shift the decimal (I HATE this rule) remember the true meaning of positive and negative exponents:
A positive exponent means that you must multiply the coefficient by ten--resulting in a larger number.
A negative exponent means that you must divide the coefficient by ten--resulting in a smaller number.
