In this page we will explore the different systems of classification for matter.
Inorganic vs. Organic CompoundsMost of what we will study in this course is inorganic chemistry. An entire branch of chemistry is devoted to the study of carbon based compounds called organic chemistry. For your reference, compounds that contain carbon (with a few exceptions) that are or were part of a living organism are considered organic compounds. While all other chemical compounds are considered inorganic compounds.

Classifying MatterWhen classifying matter the first question you must ask is: is there more than one chemical in the sample?
